British band Coldplay has made waves all over India, garnering appreciation and love from fans in the country. Several personalities have been praising the event itself. The latest one to do so is none other than Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. In his recent tweet, he praised India's capability to host an event on such a large scale. His tweet said, "Setting global benchmark ! The biggest ever Coldplay concert at Narendra Modi Stadium, with over 1.3 lakh attendees, showcased India’s capability to host world-class events."

The recent Coldplay concert was held in the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The frontman of the British Band Chris Martin called Ahmedabad the 'best stadium'. He addressed the fans and said, “We are so happy to be here, so grateful to be here. We know how lucky we are to play in your beautiful country, especially on a day when all the planets are aligned, and we have the best audience in the best stadium in the whole wide world."

Coldplay performed in India as part of their ‘Music of the Spheres World Tour’. They previously performed in the country in 2016 at the Global Citizen Festival in Mumbai. The concert was streamed online as Disney+ Hotstar brought the magic to homes nationwide with a live-stream of the concert on January 26. Fans across the country experienced the unforgettable performance virtually.

Coldplay Live in Ahmedabad to be streamed on Disney+ Hotstar this Republic Day

The Delhi High Court recently issued an injunction against a rogue pirate app and its several websites to prevent them from streaming, reproducing, or making Disney Star channel content available to the public. The lawsuit, filed by Disney Star, seeks a permanent injunction against the King's Pro+ app and related websites.

The court instructed the Department of Telecommunications and the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology to notify various internet and telecom service providers under their jurisdiction to block the infringing websites. 

Disney Star's petition argued that the King’s app, an unauthorized mobile application, lacks permission to reproduce, store, or display Hotstar’s content, for which Disney Star holds exclusive rights. The petition also asserted that the King’s app seeks to exploit Disney Star’s copyright-protected content, offering an alternative to legitimate sources.

Justice Amit Bansal found that Disney Star had made a prima facie case, with the balance of convenience in its favor. Accordingly, the court barred the King’s app from hosting, streaming, distributing, or otherwise making Disney Star's copyrighted content, shows, or programs accessible to the public.

The court also directed the domain name registrar to disclose information about King’s ownership, including name, address, IP address, payment method, bank details, and information on any other websites infringing Disney Star’s content. Additionally, it ordered PayPal Payment Private Limited to freeze the account of the King's app owner. The next hearing is scheduled for February 27, 2025.

German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz announced that it has elevated Santosh Iyer as the managing director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India. Iyer succeeds Martin Schwenk who will assume the responsibility as the president and chief executive officer, Mercedes-Benz Thailand. Both these appointments will be effective from January 1, 2023. On his new role, Iyer says, “Mercedes-Benz is at the cusp of transitioning to an exciting, electrified future and it is a privilege for me to steer the brand, introduce emerging trends and continue to define new benchmarks for our customers. We have a fantastic winning team comprising our colleagues and Franchise Partners with proven records, and I am eager to continue this winning story.” 

Iyer, who is currently serving the company as vice president, sales & marketing, has been associated with Mercedes-Benz India since 2009. With more than two decades of diverse experience in the Indian automobile industry, Iyer has worked across across sales, marketing, retail, customer service and corporate affairs. In 2016, he took up the responsibility as vice president, customer services & retail training business.

He played an instrumental role in the turnaround of the Customer Services business, successful implementation of new initiatives like MB Tyres, Parts Trading and setting up the Mercedes-Benz Academy.

Vineeta Wagh, who worked as the lead for the ecosystem marketing division for Mi and Redmi, has decided to move on. As she announced her departure via LinkedIn, she said, "Hopefully the next chapter of the work-life will start soon after a short work break." Wagh has prevously worked for Seagull Advertising and Zivame. Recently, Xiaomi India along with Oppo and Vivo came under the radar of the Indian enforcement directorate. Plus, Xiaomi cut 900 jobs in India and China owing to a 20 percent fall in global revenue during the June quarter. On August 24, Xiaomi announced a new Redmi Note 11SE in India. 

Ashwin Padmanabhan and Sidharth Parashar

Media investment company GroupM promoted Ashwin Padmanabhan to the president for investments, trading and partnerships. Siddharth Parashar was promoted to chief investment officer for Mindshare APAC. Padmanabhan will be based out of Gurugram, and Parashar will be based out of Singapore. In their new role, Padmanabhan will continue to report to Prasanth Kumar, chief executive officer for the South Asia region of GroupM. Parashar will report to Helen McRae, chief executive officer, Mindshare APAC. Padmanabhan has worked at Reliance Industries, Big 92.7 FM, Reliance Media World and Reliance Broadcast Network etc. Parashar has had stints at Universal McCann, Madison Communications, Wavemaker etc. A week ago, Arshan Saha was named as the CEO of GroupM Nexus APAC and Jon Thurlow was named as the chief operating officer.

Anupama Ramaswamy

Integrated communications company Havas Worldwide India appointed Anupama Ramaswamy as the chief creative officer. She comes on board to further catapult the creative transformation of the agency. She will assume her new role from October, and will report to Bobby Pawar, the chairman and chief creative officer. She will also work closely with the company’s managing director Manas Lahiri. Ramaswamy will be based out of Gurugram and will overlook the complete client roster of both the Gurugram and Mumbai offices. In 2021, Havas Worldwide India garnered over 30 percent growth across its Mumbai and Gurgaon offices on the back of significant business wins. Ramaswamy has worked with agencies like JWT and Cheil India, and several marquee global and Indian brands across sectors - Maruti Suzuki, Ikea, Vivo, Paytm, Subway, Tata Tea Digital, Samsung Mobiles, Airtel, Dabur, Lacoste, Whirlpool and many more. 

Ravinder Siwach, who led the creative mandate of Havas Worldwide India as the executive director and national creative director will be in the agency till October 2022. Two weeks ago, Havas Worldwide made three major appointments where Govind Agarwal, Sulagna Chanda and Neha Gupta were appointed as vice president – account management, associate vice president – strategic planning and associate vice president – client servicing.

Petr Solc

Automobile manufacturer Skoda India, which is owned by Volkswagen Group, has appointed Petr Solc as the director of sales and marketing. Solc joins Skoda India from Skoda Russia, where he was the brand director. Solc will step into his new role from 1st September, and Zac Hollis, who Solc succeeds, will remain as the director of sales and marketing until 30th September. Solc, who has over 18 years of experience, started his career with Volkswagen Group, and was based out of Latin America where he worked as a product and price analyst. Recently, Skoda released the official sketches of its three-row vision 7S 7-seat electric SUV concept. The model will be unveiled on 30th August. According to reports, India has pipped China to become the third largest market (in volume terms) in the first half of 2022 for Skoda. 

Sudeep Bansal

Personal care brand Wow Skin Science appointed Sudeep Bansal as the vice president for the growth category. In his new role, Bansal will be responsible for driving growth across performance marketing, retention and products for their D2C platforms. That includes Body Cupid, WOW Skin Science, and WOW Life Science. Bansal has 15 years of experience and has worked across Reliance Communications, Coca-Cola and OLX Group. In May, Wow Skin Science raised primary capital from Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund GIC.

Kuldeep Pawar

Spice Money promoted Kuldeep Pawar to the chief marketing officer. His responsibility would be to support the overall strategic objectives of Spice Money by developing comprehensive marketing and communication strategies. Pawar, who has an experience of more than a decade, has worked across Tata Docomo, Spice Mobiles Limited, Vodafone, Jio, Quick Heal and Niyo Solutions. A few days ago, Spice Money elevated Atul Tiwari to the position of chief human resources officer. 

Deepanjan Chattopadhyay

360 degree food packaging solution Bizongo has appointed Deepanjan Chattopadhyay as the vice president of product category. In his new role, Chattopadhyay oversees the product strategy and implementation with an emphasis on managing market-focused product development, and driving innovation across Bizongo’s product roadmap. Chattopadhyay, who is armed with an experience of more than 15 years, has worked across Tata Consultancy Services, Symphony Services, Zyme and HighRadius. In March, Bizongo acquired internet-of-things startup Clean Slate. And, In January, Bizongo acquihired Bengaluru based cloud platform Hexa.

Sajith Sivanandan

Present: Executive Vice President and Head, Disney+ Hotstar

Streaming platform Disney+ Hotstar recently appointed Sajith Sivanandan as the executive vice president and head. Sivanandan will assume his role in October, and his mandate would be to oversee Disney+ Hotstar’s overall business operations in India. This is with direct responsibility for defining the streaming service’s strategic business priorities and charting a product roadmap for the platform’s sustained, and exponential growth in the years ahead. Sivanandan will report to Rebecca Campbell, chairman of Disney’s International Content and Operations Group and K Madhavan, president.

Further, he will also work closely with local leadership in international markets as well as with the Disney+ team in the US. Sivanandan, who has an experience of more than two decades, has worked across Star TV, The Gallup Organization, Affle UK Ltd and XA Network.

Peeyush Dubey

Winning the entire bouquet of digital rights for the IPL 2023-2027 cycle is the beginning of a new innings for Viacom18 as Experts see the brand surpassing the subscription and ad revenue benchmarks set by competitor Disney+Hotstar.

“In 2021 Disney+Hotstar clocked close to Rs 1050 to 1100 crore as revenue on the back of IPL, almost 50% came from subscriptions. While there is no clear understanding on whether Viacom18 will stream via just Voot or bundle it up with JioTV but this combination has the potential to unlock the immense potential of the Bharat market (Middle India and Rural India) and that is when subscriptions will start flowing in from not just metros but also Tier-II and Tier-III cities,” said Ramsai Panchapakesan, senior vice president and national head - Integrated Media Buying at Zenith.

According to Ramsai the fact that winning bids of TV and digital rights of IPL this season were so close tells a lot about the stage at which each of the mediums are.

While Viacom shelled out Rs 23,758 crore for Package B and Package C that club all digital rights together, 23,758, Star India bagged TV rights for the same cycle for Rs 23,575 crore.

“TV has reached its maturity in terms of inventory innovation as well as reach while digital has a lot of room for growth and innovation. Another interesting fact we are seeing is that the connected TV (CTV) base is growing at a quick pace and as of May, India has reached close to 95 million CTV viewers providing an opportunity to monetize by attracting more premium brands,” he said.

“With no pressure of incremental growth as in the case of Star that had both TV and OTT rights, digital will now completely be propelled with the new benchmarks and advertisers will come to Viacom18 for digital focus growth and sharp targeting,” he added.

While close to 28 to 31 percent of total viewership for IPL for Star came from digital, Viacom18 expected to take the number to new heights with new initiatives to push growth for their platform, experts.

Turns out, the entry price for digital ad inventory may go up by 1.8x but to counter that publisher may start breaking down their cohorts to keep entry costs affordable for both new and existing advertisers.

In terms of ad format, Disney + Hotstar offered inventories in display ads (billboard, native mage) and video ads (bumper, mid-rolls, carousel, leadgen). Viacom18 as per domain experts will bring in newer formats and at revised ad rates. While a mid-roll ad on digital costs anywhere between Rs180-Rs210 CPM per 10 seconds, in 2023 the prices (CPM) can touch Rs260 to 300 for the same duration.

The natural question that comes here is why would advertisers pay the premium for the upcoming season? The simple answer to that is - reach. The growing reach has always been the sales pitch for IPL inventory.

Interestingly according to media buyers, there is no history attached to pricing negotiations. “People refer to the previous year's pricing only for the sake of comparison and Star has always gone ahead with whatever price made sense for them and advertisers have negotiated but never complained because of the sheer reach of the league,” said an industry insider.

The other factor that would justify the premium pricing for advertisers would be the novelty factor of the platform.

“Disney + Hotstar has a very different audience profile when compared to Voot. So advertisers will gain a new set of audiences who are Voot loyalists. So there will be new subscribers to the existing set. This heterogeneous audience will have immense potential for targeting across categories,” said Gaurav Saini, founder at Chandigarh-based IPL specialised media agency, Big Media Kart.

Alongside being the launch pad for various new cricketers, IPL has also opened up monetisation options for a lot of digital players.

In 2011, Indiatimes, the then mobile and audio rights partner for IPL had announced its partnership with Google wherein all 74 matches of the league were streamed on its dedicated YouTube channel.

“Back in 2011 IPL helped YouTube launch their ad format in India and even with Disney+Hotstar the entire reach of the platform was propelled by IPL. Viacom18 picking it up this time will see similar trends because IPL as a property is growing year on year and is the largest canvas that the country has to garner viewership and reach,” Kavita Shenoy, founder and CEO at Voiro Bangalore-based ad-tech and SaaS start-up Voiro provides revenue analytics and workflow automation solutions to media and content-led companies like Voot and others.

Shenoy, like other domain experts, expects Viacom18 to use IPL as a launch pad and elevate its game in terms of ad tech, reach, and access. According to her, the media giant may also come up with an altogether new platform to cash in on the potential that IPL has to offer.
