Dr. Babu Jagjivan Ram Leather Industries Development Corporation, a government-backed body and joint owner of the Geographical Indication (GI) for Kolhapuri chappals, issued a legal notice to Prada on July 1st, seeking ₹500 crore in damages for alleged infringement.

Italian luxury fashion house Prada has denied infringing on the Geographical Indication (GI) rights of Kolhapuri chappals, following the inclusion of sandals inspired by the traditional Indian footwear in its Spring/Summer 2026 menswear collection.

Responding to a legal notice, Prada’s legal team emphasized that the brand did not use the term ‘Kolhapuri’ or any associated Geographical Indication (GI) markings in the naming, marketing, or presentation of the footwear showcased at its Milan show on June 22.

Dr. Babu Jagjivan Ram Leather Industries Development Corporation, a government-backed body and joint owner of the Geographical Indication (GI) for Kolhapuri chappals, issued a legal notice to Prada on July 1st, seeking ₹500 crore in damages for alleged infringement.

Prada rejected the allegation. However, in response to a media query on June 27, the brand acknowledged that the sandals were indeed inspired by traditional Kolhapuri footwear. It clarified, however, that it had neither used the term 'Kolhapuri' nor made any reference to its manufacturing techniques.

The non-governmental body stated that it is currently evaluating an appropriate response to Prada.
