GTPL Hathway Limited announced its audited financial results for the quarter and full fiscal year ending March 31, 2025, reporting steady growth across key business segments. The company’s total consolidated revenue for FY25 crossed ₹3,500 crore, reaching ₹3,507.2 crore—an 8% increase over the previous year.

Revenue for the fourth quarter stood at ₹898.9 crore, marking a 10% year-over-year growth. In the digital cable TV segment, GTPL reported 9.6 million active subscribers and 8.9 million paying users—both up by 1 lakh year-over-year. Subscription revenue from cable TV stood at ₹298.2 crore for Q4 FY25 and ₹1,232.7 crore for the full year.

Operationally, the company signed a Grant of Permission Agreement (GOPA) with the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to provide Headend-In-The-Sky (HITS) services for the next 10 years, signaling long-term strategic expansion.

HITS is a satellite-based platform that combines the features of cable TV and direct-to-home (DTH) services. Both HITS and cable TV deliver television signals to consumers via local cable operators using satellite and optical fiber, respectively, while DTH delivers content directly to consumers via satellite.

GTPL’s broadband segment also recorded steady growth, with annual revenue increasing by 4% to ₹545.6 crore. The broadband subscriber base grew by 25,000 year-over-year, reaching 1.045 million active users. Average revenue per broadband user (ARPU) stood at ₹465, and average monthly data consumption per user rose to 396 GB—an 11% increase year-over-year.

Key Financial Highlights for FY25:

Total Revenue: ₹3,507.2 crore (up 8% YoY)

EBITDA: ₹462.5 crore, with a 13.2% EBITDA margin

Profit After Tax: ₹47.9 crore

As per the company’s filings, total revenue for Q4 FY25 rose by 10.3% to ₹891 crore, up from ₹808 crore in Q4 FY24. However, EBITDA declined by 5.6% to ₹106.6 crore, compared to ₹112.9 crore in the same quarter last year. The EBITDA margin also dropped to 12% from 14% year-over-year.

GTPL Hathway is one of India’s largest multi-system operators (MSOs), delivering digital cable TV services to over 1,500 towns across 26 states. It leads the wireline broadband market in Gujarat and is a major player in West Bengal. The company operates through a vast network of over 47,000 business partners and offers more than 950 TV channels, including 130+ GTPL-owned platforms.

GTPL crosses ₹3,500 cr in FY25 revenue, strengthens Cable TV & Broadband presence

Television (TV) broadcasters in India are expected to see a 300 basis point (bps) increase in operating margins, reaching approximately 15% by the fiscal year 2027, according to a report by Crisil Ratings. The expansion of digital offerings and economies of scale are driving this improvement, helping profitability edge closer to pre-pandemic levels. 

However, the long-term success of the sector will depend on how well broadcasters can compete with digital platforms, as consumer preferences continue shifting towards on-demand digital content. 

Digital surge reshaping the industry 

The Crisil analysis, covering TV broadcasters that account for nearly 90% of industry revenues, indicates that revenue growth has been largely stagnant from 2022 to 2025. This slowdown is attributed to consumers increasingly opting for over-the-top (OTT) platforms like Netflix, Hotstar, and Amazon Prime, as well as free digital content on YouTube and Instagram. 

With broadband penetration on the rise and digital platforms offering greater engagement and convenience, traditional linear TV broadcasting is expected to remain stable or see marginal declines. 

Broadcasters adapting to digital trends

To capitalize on digital consumption, many TV broadcasters have launched their own digital platforms, offering content such as live sports, news, and entertainment via mobile apps and smart TV applications. This has helped them capture a larger share of ad revenue, particularly from sectors like fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), automobiles, e-commerce, and real estate. 

"The ability of digital platforms to deliver personalized, data-driven advertisements is attracting more advertisers and shifting ad spending away from traditional TV," said Ankit Hakhu, Director, Crisil Ratings. 

Broadcasters are also exploring new revenue models, including subscription-based services and paywalls for premium content, as they compete with digital-only platforms for both viewership and revenue. 

Financial Outlook: Profitability and Revenue Growth 

Crisil Ratings projects that digital revenues for broadcasters, which grew at an average of 15% from 2022 to 2025, will continue to grow at a double-digit rate over the next two years. By fiscal 2027, digital is expected to contribute nearly 25% of total revenue. 

"With rising digital revenue and stable fixed costs, broadcasters are spreading content costs across a wider consumer base," said Varun Marwaha, Associate Director, Crisil Ratings. "This will improve operating margins to 16-18%, bringing them closer to pre-pandemic levels." 

The return on capital is also expected to improve to 10-12% by 2027, though it will remain below the 12-15% levels seen before the pandemic and the 15% peak of the past two decades. 

Despite these positive trends, broadcasters face increasing competition from digital-only platforms. The industry’s future growth and profitability will depend on how effectively traditional TV players can innovate, adapt to changing consumer behavior, and differentiate their digital offerings from established streaming giants. 

As digital transformation continues to reshape the media landscape, broadcasters will need to balance traditional TV operations with an aggressive push towards digital monetization to maintain their financial health and market relevance.

TV broadcasters' margins set to improve amid digital expansion: Crisil Ratings

JioStar integrates Sports18 channels to Star Sports Network

The All India Digital Cable Federation (AIDCF) has urged Ministry of Information and Broadcasting to expedite release of the draft Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill, 2023. The ministry had submitted its Action Taken Report to the Parliamentary Standing Committee, stating that the process would take some time and that the committee would be kept updated on its progress.

On March 11, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) emphasized the urgent need to create a level playing field for all broadcasting services and address challenges related to satellite-based technologies, which continue to be governed by outdated legislation.

The report stated, "In light of these concerns, the committee believes that the cable TV industry requires regulation through a comprehensive act. Therefore, we recommend that the Ministry ensure the timely enactment of the proposed Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill, 2023, as it will significantly address industry concerns."

The Ministry further stated, "Regarding the timeline for presenting the draft bill before Parliament, the Ministry will prepare a draft Cabinet Note after completing consultations with stakeholders. This note will then be circulated for inter-ministerial consultation. After that, the draft bill will be submitted for the Cabinet's approval. This process is expected to take some time, and the committee will be kept informed of its progress."

The release of MIB’s Action Taken Report provides important insights into the government’s stance on key issues affecting the cable TV sector. AIDCF acknowledges the Ministry’s efforts to address some of the industry's concerns, particularly through the acceptance of certain recommendations.

AIDCF noted that the Parliamentary Committee has recognized these concerns and reiterated that MIB, as the nodal ministry for cable television regulation in India, must actively seek updates on these matters and provide a more comprehensive response at the earliest opportunity.

An AIDCF spokesperson said, "We also request the Honorable Ministry to bring the draft Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill, 2023, at the earliest possible time. The contributions of TRAI and MIB in bringing relief to the industry are commendable and undeniable."

However, cable operators are also raising serious concerns that the government must address to support the growth of the cable TV industry.

A senior cable industry veteran stated, "Consumer choice is being undermined due to deep discounting—up to 45%—on à la carte versus bundled channel pricing. This issue needs to be resolved. For a three-hour movie, TV consumers end up watching for nearly five hours due to excessive advertisements, despite paying ₹19 for that channel. There is an urgent need for better content on TV, and advertising time also needs to be reviewed."

Additionally, serious reforms are required to address the decline in cable TV subscribers, which is also leading to significant job losses, he added.

AIDCF also applauded MIB for implementing progressive measures such as extending the MSO renewal period to 10 years, creating a National Register for LCOs, introducing online registration for LCOs, ensuring channels are strictly classified as either Pay or Free-to-Air (FTA), preventing Pay channels from being aired as FTA on DD Free Dish, and recommending policy guidelines for FAST channels.

An AIDCF spokesperson stated, "Despite these positive developments, several key challenges continue to strain the cable TV industry and require urgent attention, such as escalating channel prices, forced bundling, reduced consumer choice, regulatory imbalances with OTT platforms, linear TV channels on streaming platforms, and the misuse of regulatory loopholes by FAST channels."

While MIB and TRAI play a crucial role in shaping a regulatory environment that supports the long-term sustainability of the cable TV industry, swift reforms are necessary to curb the sector's decline, the spokesperson added.

The Cable TV industry in India is currently regulated by multiple laws, rules, and guidelines under various authorities such as the MIB, TRAI, and DoT. Recognizing the complexity of the existing system, the MIB has taken steps to streamline regulations. It has also acknowledged the urgent need to create a level playing field for all broadcasting services, including satellite-based technologies.

In 2021, the MIB issued guidelines allowing Multi-System Operators (MSOs) to share infrastructure, such as headends and networks, under specific conditions. This move is expected to reduce costs and promote small-scale operators by eliminating the need for heavy investments.

Another major reform is the shift from offline to online registration for Local Cable Operators (LCOs). Currently, LCOs register at local Head Post Offices, making the process cumbersome and inefficient. The MIB is in the advanced stages of launching an online registration system, which will be integrated into the Broadcast Seva Portal. This will simplify registration, improve compliance, and provide PAN-India validity for operators.

To improve oversight and transparency, the MIB is developing a Cable TV Monitoring Cell (CTMC), which will ensure that MSOs regularly report subscriber data. This initiative is designed to address issues like underreporting and tax evasion, which have been longstanding concerns in the industry.

Another major reform is the shift from offline to online registration for Local Cable Operators (LCOs). Currently, LCOs register at local Head Post Offices, making the process cumbersome and inefficient. The MIB is in the advanced stages of launching an online registration system, which will be integrated into the Broadcast Seva Portal. This will simplify registration, improve compliance, and provide PAN-India validity for operators.

The government responded to recommendations suggesting measures such as decriminalization of the Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995 under the Jan Vishwas Act, 2023, to increase investor confidence. Regulatory simplifications, such as longer license renewal periods for MSOs (extended to 10 years). Encouraging regional content through a new regulatory framework for Platform Services (PS) channels.


EXCLUSIVE: Cable operators urge MIB to fast track Broadcasting Services (Regulation) Bill

The Kochi City Cyber Crime Police have arrested two individuals for their alleged involvement in illegally live-streaming Indian television channels. The suspects are allegedly also part of an international piracy syndicate that streamed banned Pakistani channels through their website. Additionally, they were involved in the unauthorized distribution of the ICC Champions Trophy matches.

According to the Kochi City Cyber Crime Police, media conglomerate Star India had filed a First Information Report (FIR) against two websites—Neeplay and MHD TV World—for illegally streaming channels such as Asianet, Star Sports, Star Vijay, and Disney Channel, among others.

Following an extensive investigation, authorities arrested Shibin (38), from Malappuram, and Mohammed Shefins (32), from Perumbavoor. Both individuals were identified as the administrators of the websites in question. Their illegal activities not only infringed upon copyright laws but also had broader security and legal implications due to their connection with an international piracy network.

Kochi City Police Commissioner Putta Vimaladitya and Deputy Commissioner of Police J. Mahesh led a strategic operation to apprehend the accused. Law enforcement officials meticulously planned and executed a trap to track down and arrest the suspects.

According to a senior police officer involved in the investigation, a breakthrough came when one of the suspects posted a promotional image of Neeplay on Instagram, inadvertently revealing crucial details that helped authorities dismantle the piracy syndicate.

The illegal streaming network was not limited to Indian television content. Authorities revealed that Neeplay and MHD TV World were part of a larger international syndicate involved in broadcasting Pakistani, Sri Lankan, and Bangladeshi TV channels.

When questioned about the possible involvement of international players, the police indicated that one of the arrested suspects had worked in the Middle East for nearly a decade. This raises suspicions of deeper global connections, and the authorities are actively investigating potential links to piracy operations based in Saudi Arabia and other foreign locations.

Streaming or broadcasting Pakistani channels in India is illegal and poses a potential national security threat. The Kerala Police are now considering filing more serious charges against the accused, depending on further investigations.

In addition, the Kochi police have initiated steps to block both the illegal websites to prevent further copyright violations. The suspects will be presented in court, where they may face severe legal repercussions for their involvement in digital piracy.

Law enforcement officials have urged the public to report piracy-related activities and warned that such offenses carry serious legal consequences under Indian law.

In July 2024, the Kerala Cyber Crime Police had arrested Jeb Stephen Raj, a 33-year-old from Madurai, who was involved with the notorious piracy website Tamil Rockers. He was caught in Thiruvananthapuram while illegally recording the film 'Raayan', Dhanush's 50th movie, using a mobile phone covertly placed in a theater seat cup holder. 

Social media blunder helps Kochi police bust international piracy network

Sadhna Broadcast Limited, a company operating regional news, devotional and movie channels, is set to undergo a revamp along with a change in its corporate identity. The company will now be known as Crystal Business System Limited, following approval from the Registrar of Companies (ROC), Delhi.  

Sadhna Broadcast, established in 1994, is an Indian media company specializing in television broadcasting and advertising. The company operates a diverse portfolio of channels, including Sadhna TV, Ishwar TV, Sadhna Bhakti, Sadhna MP CG Raj, Sadhna Plus News, VIP News, Rishu Movies and Har Khabar.

The decision to rename the company was approved by the Board of Directors, with the new name officially reserved under SRN AB2415386 on January 22, 2025. The change is in line with the provisions of the Companies Act, 2013, and is subject to approval from the company’s shareholders and regulatory bodies, including BSE Limited and MSEI Limited.  

In a formal resolution, the Board stated, “Consent of the Board of Directors, subject to the approval of the members, is hereby accorded to change the name of the company from 'Sadhna Broadcast Limited' to 'Crystal Business System Limited'.” 

The revamp signals a strategic shift for the company, which has been a key player in the regional broadcasting sector. The Board has also authorized company directors to take all necessary steps to ensure a smooth transition to the new name.  

Originally founded as a small advertising agency in 1977, Sadhna Broadcast has evolved into a media powerhouse with interests spanning television media, advertising and technology. The company provides comprehensive solutions for television channels, including outdoor broadcast vans, live uplink and downlink services, equipment procurement, broadcast software solutions, studio setups, and media office infrastructure.

Sadhna Broadcast Limited to be renamed as Crystal Business System Limited

Sony Sports Network has secured the television broadcast rights for the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) home cricket series and the 2025 Pakistan Super League (PSL). 

As per the company, the television rights are exclusive for the regions of India, Nepal, Bhutan, Maldives, Myanmar while Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Sri-Lanka being non-exclusive. These television rights encompass the broadcast of all home bilateral series, one tri-nation tournament, and 34 PSL matches to be played in 2025 as well as archival content.

Rajesh Kaul, Chief Revenue Officer - Distribution and International Business and Head - Sports Business, Sony Pictures Networks India (SPN), said, "Sony Sports Network’s key goals includes delivering the best cricketing action to our viewers. To that end, we are continuously enhancing our cricket offerings, and 2025 is set to be a landmark year with over 1800 hours of live cricket on Sony Sports Network. The acquisition of the Pakistan Cricket Board rights along with New Zealand Cricket, England and Wales Cricket Board, Sri Lanka Cricket and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) positions us as the premier destination for cricket in India."

Sony Sports Network continues to expand its cricket coverage, currently holding broadcast rights for major governing bodies such as New Zealand Cricket, the England and Wales Cricket Board, Sri Lanka Cricket, the Asian Cricket Council (ACC) and with the addition of the PCB rights, the leading sports network makes its repertoire more robust.

The agreement commenced with the recent tri-nation 4 ODI series between Pakistan, New Zealand, and South Africa. 

Sony Sports Network secures exclusive broadcast rights for PCB's home series and 2025 PSL

The holiday season, football and blockbusters drive record highs for YouTube and Over-The-Top (OTT) streaming platforms in December 2024, a report mentioned.

According to Nielsen's The Gauge report, Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays remained the key drivers, contributing a 4 percent rise in overall time spent watching television compared with November 2024. 

The report underscored that in total, 2024 included nine days with over 100 billion TV viewing minutes, compared with 13 in 2023.

Further, the report mentioned that Netflix accounted for 8.5% of total TV viewing in December. Netflix benefited from its action thriller film Carry-On, which generated 5.2 billion viewing minutes from Dec. 13 – 29 and achieved the third-most streamed title of the interval. It also received a boost following the Season 2 premiere of Squid Game, which accumulated 4.9 billion viewing minutes in the final week of the interval and also notched the highest weekly total (measured Monday through Sunday) for any streaming title in 2024.

In addition to Netflix, nearly all reported streaming platforms exhibited gains. According to the Neilsen report, YouTube viewing was up 7 percent to propel the platform to a record 11.1 percent share of TV usage. Prime Video reported a 4 percent share of TV,  as it benefited from hosting five NFL Thursday Night Football games, including one on Black Friday, during the December interval.

Prime Video also saw success from its new original reality series Beast Games starring Jimmy “MrBeast” Donaldson, with over 700 million viewing minutes accumulated across its first three episodes.

The broadcast and cable categories were notably football-heavy in December, and each saw monthly increases in sports viewership of 17 percent and 29 percent, respectively, due to games across the NFL, various college bowl games, and the first round of the College Football Playoffs.

YouTube, Netflix, Prime Video smash records in Dec 2024, fueled by Christmas holiday, football

Sony Sports Network has secured the television broadcast rights for World Pickleball League (WPBL), which is set to make its debut on January 24, 2025. The event marks India’s first franchise-based Pickleball league, with matches slated to air live on Sony Sports Ten 2 channels.

Pickleball, one of the world’s fastest-growing sports, has gained significant traction in India. Over 50,000 new players took up the sport in 2024, and the number continues to rise, with nearly 1,000 courts now available across the country. Sony Sports Network aims to help further popularize the sport by bringing the exciting action of the WPBL to Indian audiences.

Indian Pickleball stars, including Vrushali Thakare, Mayur Patil, Vanshik Kapadia, Sonu Vishvakarma, Isha Lakhani and Kuldip Mahajan, will be representing their respective teams, alongside international talent such as William Sobek, Willy Ching and Max Freeman.

Sony Sports Network bags the broadcasting rights of World Pickleball League

The production arm of the UK-based BBC Group, BBC Studios is reportedly exploring options for its India content production business, including a potential exit. This decision comes in response to challenges within the media and entertainment (M&E) sector, such as industry consolidation and shrinking content budgets from TV broadcasters and OTT platforms, according to multiple sources, as reported by The Economic Times.

The BBC Studios' official statement to Storyboard18 said,  “We regularly review our business operations to ensure they are as efficient and effective as possible and are currently undertaking a review of our production operating model in India. However, no decision has been made.”
