Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Ahmedabad on Friday and toured the site of the devastating Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner (Flight AI-171) crash that killed 241 people.

The Prime Minister arrived at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and proceeded straight to the crash site in the Meghaninagar area, accompanied by Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel.

PM Modi also visited a local hospital where he met the lone survivor of the crash - Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British national of Indian origin.

Earlier, reacting to the tragedy, Modi has posted on X, "The tragedy in Ahmedabad has stunned and saddened us. It is heartbreaking beyond words. In this sad hour, my thoughts are with everyone affected by it. Have been in touch with Ministers and authorities who are working to assist those affected." The Prime Minister, who served as Gujarat Chief Minister for 12 years, expressed deep personal grief over the incident.

The crash took place on Thursday afternoon, moments after the Air India Flight AI-171 took off for London Gatwick airport. The aircraft lost altitude shortly after lifting off at around 1:30 pm, before crashing into the college's residential block and triggering a massive fire.

Ahmedabad Air Traffic Control officials confirmed that the pilot issued a 'MAYDAY' distress call, signalling a full emergency.

Aviation experts, reviewing initial visuals and data, said a lack of thrust in both engines and a potential bird strike were among the likely causes under investigation.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) stated that the aircraft was being piloted by Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, who had logged 8,200 hours of flight experience, alongside First Officer Clive Kundar, with 1,100 hours of flying experience.

Air India confirmed that 241 people lost their lives in the crash. The passenger list included 169 Indian nationals, 53 British nationals, 7 Portuguese nationals, and 1 Canadian national. The sole survivor remains under medical care.

PM Modi visits Air India crash site in Ahmedabad

A front-page newspaper advertisement featuring an Air India aircraft is under the spotlight after an eerily similar real-life mishap unfolded just hours later. On June 12, Air India's Boeing 787 Dreamliner (Flight AI-171), bound for London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad. Of the 242 people on board, only one passenger survived. The aircraft went down near the BJ Medical College campus in the Meghaninagar neighborhood, killing five people on the ground.

Earlier that morning, Mid-Day carried a large front-page ad for KidZania's upcoming Father's Day weekend event. KidZania is an indoor miniature city where children aged 4-16 can role-lay various professions, including aviation roles.

The ad featured a cartoon cityscape with an Air India-branded aircraft emerging from a building, a visual that has now taken on an unintended, chilling tone.

The image stems from a long-standing collaboration between Air India and KidZania. The same aircraft visual is used in KidZania's Aviation Academy, an attraction designed to give children hands-on exposure to aviation professions.

In July 2024, Air India had posted on X: "Dreams take off here! A new chapter in aviation excellence begins with the grand launch of the Air India Aviation Academy at @KidZaniaIndia in Delhi-NCR." The promotional video included a life-size model of an Air India plane emerging from a KidZania building - the same visual stylised for the June 12 ad.

Following the crash, KidZania India expressed deep sorrow. "Our heartfelt condolences are with all affected," the company said in a media statement.

Clarifying the intent behind the ad, KidZania added, "Regarding the advertisement published in Mid-Day, we clarify that the aircraft image is a globally recognised architectural element across KidZania(s) worldwide and represents our Aviation Academy - an educational initiative in partnership with leading airlines, including Air India. The advertisement was submitted well before the unfortunate event, as part of a pre-planned summer campaign. We remain sensitive to this tragedy and have paused any further promotion of the said visual."

The Air India Aviation Academy at KidZania centers in Noida and Mumbai was created to introduce children to the aviation world through immersive learning and flight simulations.

Print ad goes viral after Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad

Mukesh Ambani, Chairman and Managing Director of Reliance Industries, and Nita Ambani have expressed deep sorrow over the tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, which claimed more than 260 lives.

In a heartfelt statement issued on Friday, Ambani said, “Nita and I, along with the entire Reliance family, are deeply pained and anguished by the grave loss of life caused by the tragic plane crash in Ahmedabad. We extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences to all those affected by this tragic incident.”

The Reliance Industries chief also assured the company’s full support for relief efforts. “In this hour of grief, Reliance extends its full and unwavering support to the ongoing relief efforts and stands ready to assist in every possible way. We pray that all those impacted find the strength and solace to cope with their unimaginable loss. Om Shanti,” the statement read.

The London-bound Air India flight, carrying 242 passengers and crew, crashed into a medical college complex shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad, erupting into a fireball. It is now being described as one of India’s deadliest aviation disasters. Over 260 people have been confirmed dead, including students and staff in the hostel building the plane struck.

A lone British national has miraculously survived and is receiving treatment at a city hospital.

The Tatas set out to restore Air India’s tarnished reputation with a multi-pronged strategy: fleet renewal, better service standards and a global rebrand to recapture its old-world glamour and modernize its operations. For a while, that story was working. Public sentiment was cautiously hopeful. In the widely circulated Instagram video, Meek is seen smiling and reflecting on his time in India. “We’re at the airport, just boarding. Goodbye India, 10-hour flight back to London,” he says. Turning to his companion, he adds lightly, “My biggest takeaway is to not lose your patience with your partner,” before ending the clip with the words: “Going back happily, happily, happily calm.”

The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, operated by Air India and en route to London Gatwick, departed Ahmedabad at 1:38 p.m. on Thursday. The flight carried 242 people, including 53 British nationals, 169 Indian citizens, and passengers from Portugal and Canada. Within minutes of departure, the aircraft crashed into a densely populated residential area near Meghaninagar, sparking fires and leaving a trail of devastation.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer issued a somber statement on Thursday evening, calling the incident “devastating.” He added, “My thoughts are with the passengers and their families at this deeply distressing time,” and confirmed he is receiving regular updates on the evolving situation.

Buckingham Palace said King Charles III is being kept informed. British Foreign Secretary David Lammy expressed condolences on social media, writing, “Deeply saddened by news of a devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad, India. My thoughts are with all those affected. The UK is working with local authorities in India to urgently establish the facts and provide support.”

The Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) has activated crisis teams in both Delhi and London. British nationals seeking information or assistance have been advised to contact the consular emergency number. 

Flight AI171 had been scheduled to land at London Gatwick at 6:25 p.m. local time. Aviation authorities have launched a full investigation into the cause of the crash, as officials in both countries work to support grieving families and coordinate repatriation efforts.

A devastating crash involving an Air India Boeing 787 Dreamliner on flight AI-171 has shaken the nation and prompted swift action from government officials and corporate leadership alike. In a rare and emotional public statement, N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, described the day of the crash as “the worst day of (his) professional career.” Speaking to CNBC-TV18, he conveyed the depth of the tragedy and outlined the immediate steps being taken by the airline to aid survivors and bereaved families.

“This is a totally devastating tragedy. We are all in shock,” Chandrasekaran said, adding that their immediate focus is to assist the families of those affected. Teams from Air India have already flown from Delhi to Ahmedabad to provide on-ground support, he said and they are working urgently to set up emergency helplines, medical assistance, and logistical infrastructure.

In an initial response package, Tata Group announced it will provide ₹1 crore to the families of those killed in the crash. The group has also committed to covering all medical expenses for the injured and supporting the rebuilding of infrastructure in the affected area - including the BJ Medical College hostel, where the aircraft struck.

The Dreamliner, part of India’s national carrier fleet, crashed shortly after takeoff on what was scheduled to be an international flight. Eyewitnesses and local residents described scenes of chaos and heroism as they rushed to pull survivors from the wreckage before emergency services arrived.

Reports stated that the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB), under the Ministry of Civil Aviation, has launched a full inquiry into the incident, with officials expected to scrutinize flight data and maintenance records of the aircraft, as well as air traffic communication logs.

For Tata Group and Air India, this tragedy comes at a critical juncture in the airline’s turnaround journey. Air India crash: Tata Sons Chairman N. Chandrasekaran says, ‘Worst day of my professional career’

In the aftermath of a devastating plane crash in Ahmedabad on June 12, the Tata Group announced that it will provide ₹1 crore in compensation to the families of each victim who lost their life aboard Air India Flight 171.

The aircraft, bound for London with 242 people on board, including 230 passengers and 12 crew members, crashed into a residential block within the BJ Medical College campus in the Meghaninagar neighborhood. Among the victims were students and family members residing in the doctors’ hostel, where the aircraft struck while students were reportedly having lunch.

In a statement shared on social media, Tata Sons chairman N. Chandrasekaran expressed his sorrow over the incident. “No words can adequately express the grief we feel at this moment. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost their loved ones, and with those who have been injured,” he said.

The company, which owns the national carrier, said it would also cover all medical expenses for those injured in the accident and would offer further support to ensure necessary care and recovery.

In addition to direct assistance to victims and their families, the Tata Group has pledged to help rebuild the doctors’ hostel at BJ Medical College, which suffered extensive damage during the crash. “We remain steadfast in standing with the affected families and communities during this unimaginable time,” the company said in its statement.

According to the FAIMA Doctors Association, the wife of a resident doctor was among the deceased. Several MBBS students and relatives of resident doctors remain missing, while others are being treated for injuries. As of Thursday evening, at least 50 students had been hospitalized, with two to three in intensive care, as per a News18 report.

His message comes after Air India Flight AI-171, bound for London Gatwick, crashed shortly after takeoff from Ahmedabad's Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport (SVPIA).

According to initial reports, at least 40 people have been declared dead in the mishap.

In a separate media statement issued by SVPIA, authorities announced that the airport is currently not operational. "As a result, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, Ahmedabad, is currently not operational. All flight operations are temporarily suspended until further notice,” the statement read.

The airport spokesperson advised passengers to check with their airlines before heading to the airport, urging cooperation and patience as emergency operations continue.

Air India blacks out its social media after Ahmedabad-London plane crash

A devastating air tragedy struck Ahmedabad on Thursday when Air India flight bound for London crashed shortly after takeoff, killing at least 40 people, according to media reports.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, operating as Flight AI171 to London Gatwick, took off from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport at 1:39 pm from runway 23.

Minutes after departure, the aircraft issued a MAYDAY call to air traffic control, according to aviation officials.

Tata Sons and Air India Chairman N Chandrasekaran expressed deep sorrow over the unfortunate tragedy: 

"With profound sorrow I confirm that Air India flight, AI 171 operating Ahmedabad London Gatwick was involved in a tragic accident today. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with the families and loved ones of all those affected by this devastating event.

At this moment, our primary focus is on supporting all the affected people and their families. We are doing everything in our power to assist the emergency response teams at the site and to provide all necessary support and care to those impacted.

Further updates will be shared as we receive more verified information. An emergency centre has been activated and support team have been set up for families seeking information."

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIC) have launched an investigation.
