The Indian auto industry on Tuesday welcomed a new player in the fledgling electric car market--billionaire Elon Musk-owned Tesla Inc. After a long stalemate with the Indian government over manufacturing, import, and taxes debate, the US-based auto giant has finally made a debut in India at at Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) in Mumbai.

Tesla has launched three car models in the Indian market-Model Y SUV, along with two variants, Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) priced at Rs 59.89 lakh and the Long Range RWD at Rs 67.89 lakh (ex-showroom).

Currently, the domestic Passenger EV market is dominated by three mega players--Tata Motors (55% market share), and Hyundai Motors India (15% market share), respectively. On the other hand,  Mahindra and MG Motor are the distant third in the PV EV category at present. Maruti Suzuki India, which is the largest player in the PV category, is set make a debut in the EV category this year.

According to the annual report of Tata Motors, the company has sold more than 2 lakh units of EVs as of March 31, 2025. The maker of Currv, Nexon, and Tiago EV brands registered a revenue of Rs 8,187 crore in fiscal year 2025. Tata Motors' JLR arm is also working to transform its UK plant for EV production.

Auto giant Maruti Suzuki, which has not disclosed its FY25 EVs statistic yet, however, cut its maiden e-Vitara's production plans from 26,500 units to 8,200 units in the April and September period due to a supply crisis. Additionally, the company has also scaled back its lineup of EV launches to 4 instead of six by the end of 2030. As per the media reports, the automaker has indicated that it will launch the Fronx EV and the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga in the upcoming years. 

Hyundai Motor India,  which made a market debut in Indian stock exchanges in October 2024, has launched two PV EVs to date--Creta electric and Ioniq.

Mahindra & Mahindra launched BE6 and XEV9e last year, with the former clocking 30,179 bookings on Day 1. The company is a leading player in the wheeler EV segment already.

According to industry experts, the government's push for green mobility, affordable pricing, and improvement in technology are the driving factors behind automakers' optimism in manufacturing electric cars. 

Additionally, as inflation cools down and spending picks up, automakers are launching electric vehicle (EV) models under Rs 25 lakh to broaden their customer base. Tata Motors, the EV market leader, offers models priced between Rs 8 lakh and Rs 22 lakh. In contrast, Hyundai has introduced two distinct EV models: the Creta Electric, starting at Rs 17.99 lakh (ex-showroom), and the IONIQ 5, priced at Rs 46.05 lakh (ex-showroom), targeting different segments of consumers.

The Indian government has also taken several initiatives to promote EV adoption, such as  Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid and) Electric Vehicles in India (FAME) scheme,  the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, cuts in EV import duties or EVs priced over US$35,000 from 100% to just 15 percent, among others.

According to the Global Clean Investment Monitor report, India's electric four-wheeler manufacturing capacity is projected to grow to 2.5 million units by 2030. The domestic EV car demand is expected to reach between 430,000 and 1.4 million units by he end of the decade from 1 lakh in 2024.


While the competition to become the EV leader intensifies, consumers will be the ultimate winners, with a wider range of options to choose from.

Indian auto giants rev up for battle as Tesla enters domestic market

Ola Electric Chairman and Managing Director (CMD) Bhavish Aggarwal has dismissed the report, claiming that Maharashtra authorities are shutting down 90 percent of the company's showrooms due to a lack of permits for storing vehicles.

In an interview with CNBC-TV18, Aggarwal said his company has not received any official communication from the state government regarding the shutdown of stores. 

A media report has mentioned that Maharashtra's transport authority had sent a letter to Ola Electric on July 3 stating that action would be taken against the 2-wheeler EV manufacturer for insufficient valid trade certificates. 

Ola Electric has a total of 450 stores in the state at present, and is a key market for the company, accounting for 12% of the total sales in the last fiscal year.

Separately, Ola Electric declared its Quarter 1 results for the fiscal year 2026 on Monday. 

The Bengaluru-headquartered company registered a loss of Rs 428 crore in Q1 FY26 compared to Rs 347 crore in the corresponding quarter last fiscal. The auto segment losses increased to Rs 261 crore in the April to June quarter (Q1) in FY2026 as against Rs 209 crore in Q1 FY25. While the cell segment's losses climbed to Rs 69 crore in Q1 FY26, as against Rs 37 crore.

In an exchange filing, Ola Electric has anticipated vehicle volumes between 3,25,000 - 3,75,000 and revenue surging to be around Rs 4,200-Rs 4,700 crore.

Aggarwal's company has pinned hope on Gen 3 Scooters and Roadster bikes for the current fiscal year. " We see strong momentum of our new products - Gen 3 scooters and the Roadster bike leading into the festive season".

As per the Q1FY26 report, Gen 3 products accounted for almost 80% of scooter sales in Q1 FY26.

Besides, the company has expected that the auto EBITDA will turn positive and the business will generate operating cash flow later in FY26. 

As of June 30, 2025, Ola Electric EBITDA stood at a loss of 11.6 percent. 

The company has projected that the  auto capex would largely be around 3,300 crore (including capitalised R&D).

Hero MotoCorp will continue to ramp up its focus on the quality of products, services, and operations in the current calendar year. According to Vikram S. Kasbekar, Executive Director and Acting Chief Executive Officer, the 2 and 3-wheeler automaker will be investing "deeply" in "technology, customer experience, and product innovation" as it scales up.

HMCL's profit rose by 17% to Rs 4,375.81 crore in FY25. In the previous fiscal year, the company recorded a profit of Rs 3,742.16 crore. 

The company's revenue from operations also jumped from Rs 37,788.62 crore to Rs 40,923.42 crore in FY25 year-on-year. Its ad expenses surged to Rs 1,292.86 crore in FY25 as against Rs 1,089.54 crore in the previous financial year. 

The company said that the marketing initiatives for premium motorcycles were amplified and targeted to resonate with the distinct demographics. In FY25, the company implemented enhancements of digital marketing technologies, comprising social media campaigns and targeted online advertising.


The Parts, Accessories, and Merchandise business of the automaker grew 8% year-on-year to Rs 5,828 crore in FY2024-25.

HMCL also clocked a growth of 43.05% in the global market, with export surging to 287,429 units.

"With a laser-focused 80-20 strategy, we grew exports over 40%, nearly double the industry rate," the acting CEO of the company said.

In fiscal year 2025-2026, Hero MotoCorp has targeted a global expansion, extending its presence in Germany, France, Spain, and the United Kingdom in the second quarter, due to the rising demand for both internal combustion engine (ICE) and electric vehicle (EV) modes.

According to Dr Pawan Munjal, Executive Chairman, Hero MotoCorp, the company achieved 43% year-on-year growth in international market through, "a sharp focus on customer experience, quality and scale," and added, "entry into Europe and the UK later this year marks the next phase in our global ambition".

At present, Hero MotoCorp is present in 48 countries, with premium products contributing nearly 40% to global sales.

According to the Hero MotoCorp annual report, Colombia and Bangladesh clocked 66% and 44% rise, respectively, in dispatches in FY25. Besides, the Philippines' growth was driven by strong demand for Xoom 110, Xpulse 200 4V, and Hunk 160R.

The company also re-entered the Nepal market and regained the double-digit market share.

HMCL has also eyed entering the Brazilian and African markets through region-specific products and strong local partnerships.

The company's outlook is equally positive for the domestic market. Kasbekar said that cooling inflation, softening of interest rates, strong rural sentiments, and good monsoon will further improve the company's growth.

HMCL said that the rural India continued to drive industry growth, with two-wheeler demand rising 8%--outpacing urban markets in fiscal 2025. "Our rural strategy continues to give us a strong edge," the company added.

Hero MotoCorp AdEx surges by 18.6% in FY25; Aims to scale up 'Quality, Technology'

India's vehicle retail sales have witnessed a 4.84% rise in June 2025 year-on-year. According to the data by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA), 20,03,873 units of vehicles were sold in June 2025 compared to 19,11,354 units in the same period last fiscal.

The 2-wheeler sales climbed by 4.73% to 14.46 lakh units YoY; 3-wheeler sales saw a 6.68% jump at Rs 1 lakh units; Passenger Vehicle sales up by 2.45% units to 2.97 lakh units, and Commercial Vehicle sales increased by 6.60% to 73,367 units in June 2025 YoY.

"The month of June recorded a healthy 4.84% YoY growth overall. Segment-wise, every category closed in the green: 2W at 4.73%, 3W 6.68%, PV 2.45%, Trac 8.68%, CE 54.95% and CV 6.6%," FADA President, CS Vigneshwar said.

However, on a month-on-month basis, vehicle retail sales have dropped by 9.44%. In May 2025, 22,12,809 units of vehicles were sold as per FADA. 2-wheeler retail sales dropped by 12.48%  in June 2025 on a month-on-month basis, while Passenger vehicle sales declined by 1.49% in the same duration on a month-on-month basis.

FADA attributed the month-on-month decline in 2-wheeler and PV retail sales to heavy monsoon, tight liquidity, and shift in festival or marriage demand.

"2W retails dipped 12.48% MoM but still notched a 4.73% gain on a YoY basis. While the festival and marriage season demand provided a boost, financing constraints and intermittent variant shortages moderated sales. Early monsoon rains and rising EV penetration also shaped buying patterns. Several dealers cited compulsory billing and forced stock lifts—often via auto-debit wholesalers—leading to mandated high days of inventory aligned with festival-season targets. Overall, June demonstrated a resilient two-wheeler performance amid mixed market signals," the FADA President added.

In contrast, commercial vehicle sales saw a 2.97% drop on a month-over-month basis, Fada added.

"Early-month deliveries buoyed volumes before monsoon-induced slowdowns and constrained liquidity dampened enquiries and conversions. Members pointed to the impact of new CV taxation and mandatory air-conditioned cabins, which have elevated ownership costs, alongside muted infrastructure demand," he added.

According to the auto federation's July outlook, the dealers have anticipated a slowdown in retail sales due to heavy rainfall, variant shortages, and price increases.


"PV faces high-base effects, limited new-model launches, and tight financing, offset in part by festival planning and fresh incentive schemes. CV continues to grapple with muted infrastructure demand, higher ownership costs from new taxation and mandatory AC-cabin norms, even as extended order pipelines provide some relief. Overall, July is likely to witness mixed fortunes—driven by agrarian tailwinds and school reopenings, yet tempered by seasonal headwinds, elevated price points, and liquidity constraints," FADA mentioned.


Auto sales up by 4.84% in June 2025 YoY; Dealers anticipate slowdown in July: FADA

German luxury car maker BMW Group has registered a 10% jump in sales between January and June 2025 in India. The company sold 7,774 units in the first half of 2025 compared to 7,081 units in the corresponding period last year.

Besides, the electric vehicle sales also saw a jump of 234% year-on-year. According to the company, the electric cars hold an 18% share in total sales in the Indian market, with the X1 model becoming the highest-selling SAV not just for the Group but in India's premium compact segment. 

The automaker sold 7,774 BMW and Mini cars and 2,569 motorcycles in H1 2025. The MINI brand delivered 297 units, with the Mini Cooper S remaining the highest-selling model in H1 2025, witnessing a 60% rise YoY.

BMW Group's President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Vikram Pawah said that the sports activity vehicles (SAVs) and sedans have continued to witness a rise in demand. BMW's SAVs recorded 17% growth between January and June 2025


Despite a challenging environment, the BMW Group President said the company is on the fast track as it posted a 10% growth.

"We continue to unfold new opportunities in the luxury segment," Pawah said in a report by the PTI news agency.

According to the report, out of all the car models, the BMW iX1 Long Wheelbase emerged as the highest-selling electric car, followed by the flagship BMW i7. 

The long-wheelbase BMW models, including the BMW 7 Series, 5 Series, and 3 Series, BMW iX1, recorded 159% growth in the first half of the year. These models account for 47% share of the total sales.

The BMW 5 Series was the highest-selling BMW sedan in H1 2025, and the BMW 3 Series retained its class-leading position.

BMW Motorrad sold 2,569 units of motorcycles between January and June 2025.

Meanwhile, rival Audi India witnessed a 14% decline in sales to 2,128 units in H1 2025. Audi India attributed the slowdown in luxury car sales to reduced demand due to price increases and market uncertainty amid geopolitical tension.

However, the company is confident about the improvement in sales in the forthcoming festive season.

German luxury carmaker's Indian arm has witnessed a slump in sales between January and June 2025. Audi India's sales have reduced by 14% to 2,128 units in the first half of 2025 as against 2,477 units in 2024.

The company attributed the slowdown in luxury car sales to reduced demand due to price increases and market uncertainty amid geopolitical tension.

The luxury carmaker hiked prices across its car models by 2%  from May 15 onwards this year, citing exchange rate fluctuations and rising input costs. In January, the company implemented a price rise og up to Rs 1.95 lakh on select models.

However, Audi India is confident about the improvement in sales in the forthcoming festive season.

"While H1 2025 presented unique market challenges, we have used this period to strengthen our foundation for sustainable growth," said Audi India Head Balbir Singh Dhillon.

In the overall calendar year 2024, Audi registered retail sales of 5,816 units.

"We see growth potential in the luxury segment in the second half of the year, fueled by new product introductions, our digital-first approach, and unwavering focus on customer satisfaction," he added.


Audi India's car model includes  Audi A4, Audi A6, Audi Q3, Audi Q3 Sportback, Audi Q5, Audi Q7, Audi Q8, Audi S5 Sportback, Audi RS Q8, Audi Q8 e-tron, Audi Q8 e-tron Sportback, Audi e-tron GT, and Audi RS e-tron GT. 

The company is robustly betting on Electric Vehicles (EVs) in the country, installing over 6,500 charging points across the country. Audi India partnered with 16 new EV infrastructure providers to bolster the EV charging network.

According to a report by Business Standard, Audi India believes that EVs will comprise 30% of the luxury car market by 2030. 

Audi has committed to transitioning its global lineup to fully EVs by 2033, with India becoming a key manufacturing hub. 

The company has witnessed a shift in its buyers, with the young generation and women becoming crucial customers of the luxury cars.

Women account for 11% of Audi's customer base, up from 1% seven years ago.

According to Ken's research, the Indian luxury car market is valued at $ 1.14 billion, fuelled by a growing consumer base and rising disposable income across urban centers. 

Luxury cars now account for over 2% of all new car registrations in urban centers like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bangalore. The demand for premium sedans and SUVs has particularly grown in tier-1 and tier-2 cities.

Elon Musk’s vision of a driverless future is beginning to take shape as Tesla officially launched its Robotaxi pilot service in Austin, Texas. After years of anticipation and repeated delays, a limited number of Tesla’s autonomous vehicles — based on the Model Y — are now operating in designated areas of the city.

The debut rollout is currently limited to select social media influencers and digital creators as part of a soft launch. Each Robotaxi ride is priced at a flat $4.20 and operates under a controlled pilot with a human safety monitor present in the front passenger seat.

While Tesla’s move has captured global attention, it’s worth noting that Alphabet’s Waymo has been running autonomous ride-hailing services in select U.S. cities since 2018. What sets Tesla apart is its use of vision-based AI systems — relying on cameras rather than radar or lidar — a decision that has sparked debate among safety experts and regulators, especially under foggy or low-visibility conditions.

How Robotaxi Works

Currently, Tesla’s Robotaxi service runs a small fleet of 10–20 vehicles in geofenced areas of Austin, operating between 6 AM and midnight. The vehicles avoid highways, airports, and adverse weather conditions.

The ride-hailing process mimics traditional cab apps. Once opened to the public, users will be able to download the Robotaxi app, enter their destination, confirm the ride, and track the vehicle’s arrival. Features include ride customisation via Tesla’s interface — from adjusting climate control to music — and the ability to update destinations mid-ride.

Passengers can monitor the journey in real time, with safety controls that allow them to pause or stop the ride if needed. Each trip begins only after the rider confirms details through the app and taps “Start.”

Musk celebrated the milestone on X (formerly Twitter), writing: “Super congratulations to the @Tesla_AI software & chip design teams on a successful @Robotaxi launch!! Culmination of a decade of hard work.”

While it’s early days for Tesla’s autonomous cab ambitions, the Robotaxi launch marks a tangible step toward Musk’s larger goal of deploying one million self-driving cars globally. For now, Tesla is cautiously testing the waters — one ride at a time.

Tesla’s Robotaxi hits the US streets, here's what a ride will cost

Maruti Suzuki witnessed a 0.54% rise in passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market in April 2025. The automaker giant sold 138,704 units of PVs in India In April 2025 compared to 137,952 units in April 2024.

The sales of mini segment models of Maruti, which includes Alto and S-Presso dropped by 45% to 6,332 units in April 2025. Last April, the company sold 11,519 units in the domestic market.

In the quarterly earning calls, Maruti Suzuki chairman RC Bhargava raised alarm regarding the dwindling sales of the Mini segment cars. Bhargava said that the income tax relief on annual earnings of up to Rs 12 lakh will not revive the demand for small cars.

Bhargava raised questions about how people below Rs 12 lakh income can afford a car costing Rs 10 lakh and above.

The MSI Chairman said that income tax relief announced during the budget session 2025 is not enough to encourage buyers to purchase cars.

"For the car sales to revive, small cars have to become affordable," he said.

Notably, MSI's compact segment cars, such as Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, and WagonR, only witnessed a marginal rise in sales in April 2025. The company sold 61,591 units last month compared to 56,953 in April 2024.

Maruti's mid-size car model, Ciaz also witnessed a significant drop in sales in April 2025. 

The sales of Ciaz dropped from 867 units in April 2024 to 321 units in April 2025.

Utility vehicle sales saw an increase of 4.36% in April 2025 year-on-year.

Maruti sold 59,022 units of Brezza, Ertiga, Grand Vitara, Jimny, Invicto, and XL6 in April 2025 versus 56,553 units in the same month in 2024.

Maruti Suzuki exported a total of 27,911 units of cars in April 2025, up 26% (22,160 units)

The total sales, both export and domestic stood at 179,791 units in April this year.

Maruti Suzuki's mini car sales drop by 45% in April 2025, exports up 26%

Tata Motors' Jaguar Land Rover India sold 6,183 units in the fiscal year 2025, up 40% year-on-year. The automaker's retail and wholesales in the fourth quarter of FY25 increased to the highest-ever level at 1,793 and 1,710 units, respectively.

The luxury automakers' Defender became the highest-selling model, clocking 90% growth, followed by locally manufactured Range Rover and Range Rover Sport at 72% and 42%, respectively, PTI news agency reported.

JLR India Managing Director Rajan Amba told PTI news agency that the automaker has outpaced the luxury car industry in FY25 with retail and wholesale growth of around 40%.

"The company has outpaced the luxury car industry with retail and wholesale growth of around 40% in the current year on the back of 81% year-on-year growth in FY24," Amba said.

According to Amba, "Locally manufactured Range Rover and Range Rover Sport have been a key driver of this growth, while Defender continues to sustain its leadership position in its category".

Amba said that JLR's 'House of Brands' strategy has resonated strongly with high-end consumers.

Notably, Tata Motors's global wholesales witnessed a 3% year-on-year decline at 3,66,177 units in Q4 FY 25. In contrast, the global wholesales of all Tata Motors commercial vehicles and the Tata Daewoo range were at 1,07,765 units, down 3% versus Q4 FY24. The wholesales of Tata Motors passenger vehicles saw a 6% drop YoY worldwide. The company's PV global wholesales stood at 1,46,999 units in Q4 FY25. The global wholesales for Jaguar Land Rover were 1,11,413 vehicles, whereas Jaguar wholesales for the quarter were 7,070 vehicles, while Land Rover wholesales for the quarter were 1,04,343 vehicles.

India's auto sales witnessed a 6.46% rise in fiscal year 2025. The Passenger Vehicles (PV) grew by 4.87% while the two-wheeler (2W) sales saw a 7.71% year-on-year rise. In the rural market, the 2W sales witnessed a jump of 8.39% versus 6.77% in the urban areas. The PVs also performed better in rural belts with 7.93% growth compared to 3.07% in the urban market, according to the data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations of India (FADA).

In contrast, the commercial vehicle sales in FY25 remained flat at -0.17%.

According to the auto body's March 2025 data, the retail sales saw de-growth for the second consecutive month.  The retail sales declined -0.7% year-on-year in March 2025 but improved by over 12% Month-on-Month.

The PV sales scaled up by 6% while CV sales by 2.6% in March 2025. The 2-wheeler sales declined by -1.7% in the same period.

The auto federation has expected mid to high single-digit growth in 2-wheeler and low single-digit growth in PV and CV. However, global tariff  war, leading to potential stock market turbulence and weaker mutual fund SIP returns could erode disposable incomes, further impacting the auto purchases.

Dealers have emphasized the need for the RBI rate cuts to reduce borrowing costs.

"The first three weeks of March were notably weak, largely due to the Kharmas period, but sales accelerated significantly in the last week, driven by positive triggers such as Navratri, Gudi Padwa, Eid, and year-end purchasing influenced by depreciation benefits. Overall, retail sales saw a YoY decline of -0.7% and a MoM increase of 12%. Among the segments, 2W, 3W, and Trac registered YoY drops of -1.7%, -5.6%, and -5.7% respectively, while PV and CV grew by 6% and 2.6% YoY. All segments were in positive territory on an MoM basis," CS Vigneshwar, FADA President said. 

"In PV, the segment benefited from discounting, forthcoming price hikes, and festive buying, contributing to a 15.5% MoM and a 6% YoY increase. New model launches and better variant availability also aided growth. Nonetheless, many dealers highlighted unrealistic targets, liquidity challenges, and regional pockets of low demand, resulting in PV inventories rising to about 50–55 days. Incentives and festival-driven gains did push overall results higher, but dealers remain cautious about high stock levels and target pressures as the new financial year begins," FADA said.
