Maruti Suzuki witnessed a 0.54% rise in passenger vehicle sales in the domestic market in April 2025. The automaker giant sold 138,704 units of PVs in India In April 2025 compared to 137,952 units in April 2024.

The sales of mini segment models of Maruti, which includes Alto and S-Presso dropped by 45% to 6,332 units in April 2025. Last April, the company sold 11,519 units in the domestic market.

In the quarterly earning calls, Maruti Suzuki chairman RC Bhargava raised alarm regarding the dwindling sales of the Mini segment cars. Bhargava said that the income tax relief on annual earnings of up to Rs 12 lakh will not revive the demand for small cars.

Bhargava raised questions about how people below Rs 12 lakh income can afford a car costing Rs 10 lakh and above.

The MSI Chairman said that income tax relief announced during the budget session 2025 is not enough to encourage buyers to purchase cars.

"For the car sales to revive, small cars have to become affordable," he said.

Notably, MSI's compact segment cars, such as Baleno, Celerio, Dzire, Ignis, Swift, and WagonR, only witnessed a marginal rise in sales in April 2025. The company sold 61,591 units last month compared to 56,953 in April 2024.

Maruti's mid-size car model, Ciaz also witnessed a significant drop in sales in April 2025. 

The sales of Ciaz dropped from 867 units in April 2024 to 321 units in April 2025.

Utility vehicle sales saw an increase of 4.36% in April 2025 year-on-year.

Maruti sold 59,022 units of Brezza, Ertiga, Grand Vitara, Jimny, Invicto, and XL6 in April 2025 versus 56,553 units in the same month in 2024.

Maruti Suzuki exported a total of 27,911 units of cars in April 2025, up 26% (22,160 units)

The total sales, both export and domestic stood at 179,791 units in April this year.

Last April, Maruti sold 168,089 units.

Maruti Suzuki's mini car sales drop by 45% in April 2025, exports up 26%

Tata Motors' Jaguar Land Rover India sold 6,183 units in the fiscal year 2025, up 40% year-on-year. The automaker's retail and wholesales in the fourth quarter of FY25 increased to the highest-ever level at 1,793 and 1,710 units, respectively.

The luxury automakers' Defender became the highest-selling model, clocking 90% growth, followed by locally manufactured Range Rover and Range Rover Sport at 72% and 42%, respectively, PTI news agency reported.

JLR India Managing Director Rajan Amba told PTI news agency that the automaker has outpaced the luxury car industry in FY25 with retail and wholesale growth of around 40%.

"The company has outpaced the luxury car industry with retail and wholesale growth of around 40% in the current year on the back of 81% year-on-year growth in FY24," Amba said.

According to Amba, "Locally manufactured Range Rover and Range Rover Sport have been a key driver of this growth, while Defender continues to sustain its leadership position in its category".

Amba said that JLR's 'House of Brands' strategy has resonated strongly with high-end consumers.

Notably, Tata Motors's global wholesales witnessed a 3% year-on-year decline at 3,66,177 units in Q4 FY 25. In contrast, the global wholesales of all Tata Motors commercial vehicles and the Tata Daewoo range were at 1,07,765 units, down 3% versus Q4 FY24. The wholesales of Tata Motors passenger vehicles saw a 6% drop YoY worldwide. The company's PV global wholesales stood at 1,46,999 units in Q4 FY25. The global wholesales for Jaguar Land Rover were 1,11,413 vehicles, whereas Jaguar wholesales for the quarter were 7,070 vehicles, while Land Rover wholesales for the quarter were 1,04,343 vehicles.

Tata Motors' JLR India clocks 40% rise in retail sales, reaching 6,183 units in FY25

India's auto sales witnessed a 6.46% rise in fiscal year 2025. The Passenger Vehicles (PV) grew by 4.87% while the two-wheeler (2W) sales saw a 7.71% year-on-year rise. In the rural market, the 2W sales witnessed a jump of 8.39% versus 6.77% in the urban areas. The PVs also performed better in rural belts with 7.93% growth compared to 3.07% in the urban market, according to the data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations of India (FADA).

In contrast, the commercial vehicle sales in FY25 remained flat at -0.17%.

According to the auto body's March 2025 data, the retail sales saw de-growth for the second consecutive month.  The retail sales declined -0.7% year-on-year in March 2025 but improved by over 12% Month-on-Month.

The PV sales scaled up by 6% while CV sales by 2.6% in March 2025. The 2-wheeler sales declined by -1.7% in the same period.

The auto federation has expected mid to high single-digit growth in 2-wheeler and low single-digit growth in PV and CV. However, global tariff  war, leading to potential stock market turbulence and weaker mutual fund SIP returns could erode disposable incomes, further impacting the auto purchases.

Dealers have emphasized the need for the RBI rate cuts to reduce borrowing costs.

"The first three weeks of March were notably weak, largely due to the Kharmas period, but sales accelerated significantly in the last week, driven by positive triggers such as Navratri, Gudi Padwa, Eid, and year-end purchasing influenced by depreciation benefits. Overall, retail sales saw a YoY decline of -0.7% and a MoM increase of 12%. Among the segments, 2W, 3W, and Trac registered YoY drops of -1.7%, -5.6%, and -5.7% respectively, while PV and CV grew by 6% and 2.6% YoY. All segments were in positive territory on an MoM basis," CS Vigneshwar, FADA President said. 

"In PV, the segment benefited from discounting, forthcoming price hikes, and festive buying, contributing to a 15.5% MoM and a 6% YoY increase. New model launches and better variant availability also aided growth. Nonetheless, many dealers highlighted unrealistic targets, liquidity challenges, and regional pockets of low demand, resulting in PV inventories rising to about 50–55 days. Incentives and festival-driven gains did push overall results higher, but dealers remain cautious about high stock levels and target pressures as the new financial year begins," FADA said. 

Auto sales in India see 6.46% growth in FY25, rural markets lead the way

Maruti Suzuki on Wednesday announced that it would be increasing the car prices across seven car models from next week in April. In a stock exchange filing, the automaker said it has planned to increase car prices due to a rise in input cost and operational expenses with effect from 8th April.

According to Maruti Suzuki, the ex-showroom prices for the Grand Vitara will increase up to Rs 62,000--the highest among all car models. For Fronx, the company has only hiked the rates up to Rs 2,500.

The other Maruti Suzuki car models with their increased ex-showroom prices are-Eeco (Up to Rs 22,500); Wagon-R (Up to Rs 14,000); Ertiga (Up to 12,500); XL6 (Up to Rs 12,500), and Dzire Tour S (Up to Rs 2,500), respectively.

"Due to rising input costs, operational expenses, regulatory changes, and feature additions, the Company has planned to increase car prices starting on 8th April," Maruti Suzuki said in a stock exchange filing.

The automaker announced the third price increase of its cars in 2025 due to the rise in input costs and operational expenses.

Maruti increased car prices in January and February this year and said the company was committed to optimising costs and reducing the impact on the consumers. In January, it increased the prices of its vehicles up to 4 percent, depending on the variants. 

In February, MSI increased the price of Celerio up to Rs 32,500--the highest among all car models. For Jimny, the company increased the price by Rs 1,000 from 1 February.

Amid the ongoing tax dispute between Volkswagen and the Indian government, the authorities have told the Mumbai High Court that acquiescing to the demand of the German automaker to quash a $1.4 billion tax bill would have "catastrophic consequences", Reuters news agency reported.

According to the tax officials, Volkswagen unit, Skoda Auto Volkswagen India, allegedly misclassified component imports for certain Audi, VW, and Skoda cars to evade higher tariffs between 2012 and 2024. The company is accused of declaring these imports as individual parts rather than Completely Knocked Down (CKD) units, which incur higher customs duties.

CKD units are taxed at rates of 30%-35%, whereas auto parts are taxed at around 5%-15%.

Volkswagen rebutted saying that the tax officials' "inaction and tardiness" led to delays in shipment reviews,

However, the officials said that that Volkswagen concealed crucial information and data about its imports, leading to the delays.

Volkswagen officials argued that if tax officials had completed the reviews earlier, the company could have challenged the findings or reassessed its import strategy.

The tax authority claimed that Volkswagen submitted the required information and documents for shipment reviews "only in tranches." The Indian government is seeking a court directive for Volkswagen to follow procedures and respond to its tax notice through engagement with the authority, rather than approaching the judges directly.

EVs maker Ola Electric has issued a clarification over the recent media reports regarding the discrepancies in its February 2025 sales figure. The company attributed the issue to a temporary backlog in vehicle registrations.

In a stock exchange filing, Ola Electric said its sales remained robust and efforts are underway to clear the backlog, which had led to inconsistencies in registration data.

"We have noted the false narratives being spread about our February 2025 sales data. Our sales remain strong, and the temporary backlog in February was due to ongoing negotiations with our vendors responsible for vehicle registrations. This backlog is being rapidly cleared, with daily registrations exceeding 50% of our three-month daily sales average. 40% of the February backlog has already been cleared, and the remaining will be fully resolved by the end of March 2025," the company said.

In a separate filing, the Bhavish Aggarwal-led company disclosed that it had received information requests from the Ministry of Heavy Industries on March 11, 2025, and from the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) on March 18, 2025.

It said that there were no regulatory or legal proceedings underway against it.

As per media reports, the Ministry of Heavy Industries was examining discrepancies between the company’s reported sales and actual vehicle registrations. 

The Maharashtra Regional Transport Office (RTO) conducted inspections at several Ola Electric showrooms. The official scrutinized whether vehicles had valid documentation and were being sold under trade certificates. During the investigation, 36 scooters were seized in Mumbai and Pune over compliance violations.

Some reports suggested that several Ola Electric showrooms were shut in Punjab. Jabalpur RTO authorities issued notices to the company after unregistered scooters were found being sold without valid trade certification.

Ola Electric claimed it sold 25,000 electric scooters in February 2025, however, data from the government’s Vahan portal showed only 8,600 registrations for the same period. 

Ola Electric clarifies discrepancies in February sales figures

India's leading automakers have announced to hike prices of their car models from April 2025, blaming the rise in input costs. While Maruti Suzuki said it will be increasing the price up to 4% across all models, Tata Motors has decided a price increase of up to 2%, across its commercial vehicle range from next month.

On Tuesday, Hyundai Motor India said that due to a rise in raw material cost and operational costs, the company will be increasing the prices of its car models by up to 3% from April. Kia India will also be increasing the prices of its cars by up to 3%. 

Renault India also said it will increase the prices of its entire model range by up to 2% starting next month.

However, Mercedes-Benz India may increase the prices of its car models in April 2025. 

The car price hike comes as the entire auto industry is facing a sales setback. According to data by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations of India (FADA), car sales, including  2-wheeler, 3-wheeler, and commercial vehicles, declined 7% year-on-year in February 2025. 

Passenger vehicles witnessed a 10 percent drop while commercial vehicle sales were down at 8.6%.

PV dealers noted weak market sentiment which especially continues in the entry-level category, delayed conversions, challenging targets, and stressed that OEMs should avoid overburdening dealers with excessive inventory.

On the other hand, commercial vehicle dealers pointed to a challenging environment, with weak sales in the transportation sector, tightening finance norms, and pricing pressures delaying customer decisions—particularly in bulk orders and institutional contracts.

Tata Motors has announced that it will be increasing the prices of its commercial vehicles from April 1, 2025. In a stock exchange filing on Tuesday, the Indian automaker said it will hike the car prices by up to 2 percent across its commercial vehicle range. 

"The price increase is to offset the rise in input costs, and will vary as per individual model and variant," Tata Motors added.

In January 2025, Tata Motors increased the prices of its commercial vehicles by up to 2 percent, and passenger vehicles by up to 3 percent.

Tata Motors witnessed a 7 percent drop in its commercial vehicle sales in February 2025. The company sold 32,533 units of CVs in February compared to 35,085 in the same month in 2024. 

Furthermore, the total domestic sales stood at 77,232 units, down 9 percent year-on-year.

On Monday, Maruti Suzuki announced the third price increase for its cars in 2025. According to Maruti Suzuki, the price increase is expected to be up to 4 percent and will vary depending on the model.

"While the Company continuously strives to optimize costs and minimize the impact on its customers, some portion of the increased cost may need to be passed on to the market," Maruti said in a stock exchange filing on Monday.

In January, Maruti Suzuki increased the prices of its vehicles up to 4 percent, and in February, it shared a detailed new price list of all its cars.

Maruti's car price hikes have come at a time when the company's mini and compact segment car sales declined by 7.93 percent to 817,946 units between April and February 2025 year-on-year.

Shares of Maruti Suzuki were up .51 percent, trading at Rs 11,572.45 apiece on the BSE at 11:08 am on Monday.

Auto sales in February 2025 witnessed a 7 percent decline, reflecting "Flat to de-growth sentiment", according to the data by the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations of India (FADA).

The Two-wheeler vehicle sales saw a 6 percent dip in February 2025 year-on-year while passenger vehicle sales skid by 10 percent in the same month.

In February 2025, 13.53 lakh units of 2-wheeler were sold compared to 14.44 lakh units in the same period in 2024.

Additionally, 3.03 lakh passenger vehicles were sold in February 2025 versus 3.38 sold in the same period last year.

Sales of commercial vehicles dropped to 82,763 units at 8.6 percent in February 2025, the data added.

According to the monthly vehicle data by FADA, the two-wheeler sales declined 7.38 percent in urban areas and 5.5 percent in rural regions in February 2025. In the case of passenger vehicles, the entry-level demand remained subdued, with dealers citing delayed conversions and challenging targets.

However, the dealers have a positive outlook for March 2025, predicting 45 percent growth, while 40 percent foresee flat performance and 14 percent anticipate de-growth.

The apex body of the automobile retail industry added that multiple festivals, such as Holi, Gudi Padwa, Navratri, and year-end depreciation benefits could lift retail sentiment across 2W, PV, and CV segments.

"February witnessed a broad-based downturn across all categories, a trend that was anticipated in our previous survey which projected a ‘Flat to De-growth’ sentiment for the month. Overall, the market closed with a -7% YoY decline, with 2W, 3W, PV, Trac, and CV falling by 6%, 2%, 10%, 14.5% and 8.6% respectively. During the month, dealers began expressing concerns about inventory being pushed to them without their consent. While such initiatives may serve broader business objectives, it is critical to align wholesale allocations with genuine demand to protect dealer viability and ensure healthy inventory management," CS Vigneshwar, FADA President said.

Additionally, the Motor Vehicle Road Tax Collection also dropped by 7.4 percent to Rs 6,340 crore in February 2025 compared to Rs 6,843 crore in Feb 2024.
