In a major development following the tragic stampede during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's (RCB) victory celebrations on June 4, the Bengaluru police on Friday arrested Nikhil Sosale, the marketing head and revenue of RCB from Diageo India. The stampede, which occurred outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, claimed 11 lives and left 64 others injured.

Sosale, who according to his LinkedIn profile leads the design, strategy, and business delivery for RCB's marketing program, was arrested after mounting pressure from the Karnataka government. He also worked at United Breweries overlooking its sports marketing business. His close social connections to celebrities such as Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma—both of whom follow his private Instagram account—have also drawn public attention.

The arrest follows Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s directive on Thursday to take stringent action against RCB, the event organiser DNA Entertainment Networks Pvt. Ltd., and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA). The FIR, registered by a police inspector at the Cubbon Park station, invoked serious charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita under sections 115 (Voluntarily causing hurt), 118 (Causing hurt or grievous hurt using dangerous means),121(Deterring a public servant from duty), 190 (Unlawful assembly)

Police also detained three staff members of DNA Entertainment Networks for questioning. Meanwhile, key KSCA officials, including its secretary and treasurer, are reported to be absconding.

Bengaluru police claimed that RCB’s management had not coordinated with the police prior to announcing their victory parade on social media. Their tweet—promoting the celebration—went viral, garnering over a million views. It was only after the post gained traction that RCB approached the police for formal permission, which was denied due to crowd safety concerns. Despite the refusal, the event drew a massive crowd, overwhelming arrangements and resulting in chaos.

In the wake of the incident, the Karnataka government suspended top police officials, including Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda, citing serious lapses in crowd management and public safety. The administration’s handling of the incident has come under severe criticism, with opposition leaders from the BJP calling for the resignation of both Chief Minister Siddaramaiah and Deputy CM DK Shivakumar.

To probe the circumstances surrounding the stampede, the state government has constituted a one-man judicial commission led by retired Karnataka High Court judge Justice Michael D’Cunha. The commission has been asked to submit its findings within 30 days.

Meanwhile, RCB announced on Thursday that it would provide financial assistance to the families of all 11 victims and support 33 injured individuals through a newly established relief fund titled ‘RCB Cares.’

India’s live event industry is on a remarkable growth trajectory, but the tragic death of 11 cricket fans during the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) victory celebration has cast a stark spotlight on the urgent need for better infrastructure and planning. Experts warn that the nation’s capacity to host world-class events is being outpaced by its readiness to manage them.

The celebrations, held at short notice outside Bengaluru’s M Chinnaswamy Stadium after RCB clinched its first Indian Premier League (IPL) trophy in 18 years, turned into chaos as thousands of fans thronged the area. The resulting stampede led to multiple fatalities and raised uncomfortable questions about administrative preparedness.

While the Karnataka government claimed the felicitation event was a last-minute affair and the crowd turnout was underestimated, many believe this tragedy was avoidable.

At the same time, the sector is experiencing record growth. According to a recent EY report, India’s live events market surpassed ₹12,000 crore in 2024 and is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 19% over the next three years. High-profile concerts, such as Coldplay’s performance in Ahmedabad, have demonstrated the country’s ability to host large-scale, global-standard shows while also stimulating local economies.

Yet these successes remain marred by logistical breakdowns and inconsistent planning. “The incident which took place in Bengaluru is extremely disappointing and saddening,” said Nishant Kini, Founder & Director of The Nishe & Co, and a veteran who has worked with top event firms like Wizcraft and Percept. “The sports and concert economy in India is growing, but this requires constant infrastructure support. The stadiums, transport, single-window clearance among local administration support must be strengthened to make any state a successful place for experiential events.”

Kini further emphasized, “It is very important that organizers are in sync with state governments to provide adequate support for transport, safety and well-being of attendees. There is an utmost need for better infrastructure in the country for the growth of the experiential, live sporting, and concert industry.”

The growing popularity of live experiences has not only bolstered allied industries like tourism, food services, and transportation but also positioned India as a potential global hub for entertainment. However, event cancellations and safety lapses paint a more complicated picture. The NH7 Weekender festival in Pune, for instance, was recently cancelled after Pimpri Chinchwad police denied permission due to anticipated law and order and traffic issues.

According to Cauvery Adiga, COO of NEB Sports Entertainment Private Limited, meticulous planning and strong coordination between all stakeholders are essential for successful event execution.

“Organizing a high-volume event requires meticulous planning and seamless coordination among various stakeholders—organizers, police, local administration, medical services, and more,” Adiga said. “Clear and timely communication with participants is equally critical to ensure safety, crowd control, and a positive experience for all involved.”

Adiga also underscored the importance of local authorities. “The local administration brings invaluable insight into the region’s operational dynamics, including infrastructure, traffic flow, and emergency services. Their role is essential in assessing potential impacts, planning execution, and ensuring smooth functioning.”

While praising the Bengaluru Police for their effectiveness in managing large crowds, she acknowledged that the RCB celebrations were hindered by the lack of preparation. “The RCB victory celebrations were announced at very short notice, leaving little time for structured planning and coordination. Additionally, the rapid spread of information via social media channels led to overcrowding and confusion, further complicating the situation.”

Viraf Sutaria, mentor of the Bengaluru Midnight Marathon (BMM), echoed the need for uncompromising standards. “There should be no compromise in aspects such as the holding capacity of a venue and professionals must be roped in for executing such events. Adequate coordination with police personnel, traffic, and law and order departments is critical, and they must be briefed and taken around the entire area.”

Sutaria outlined the rigorous process followed at BMM to prevent mishaps. “Proper permissions are obtained, and most importantly, traffic is organized and diverted in a manner that the public is not overly inconvenienced. We do not want road rage to spoil a good event,” he said.

“In addition, we have our own security guards and volunteers, who are trained to guide and maintain calm at all times. Route marshals are professionals who have managed many marathons. All permissions for music, DJ, food, metro rail, BBMP, waste management etc. are taken well in advance. The entire area is spic and span and back to normal within two hours of the event closing.”

As India races ahead in the live event space, the tragedy in Bengaluru serves as a grim reminder that enthusiasm must be matched with planning. Without robust infrastructure, clear regulations, and close cooperation among authorities, the promise of India’s entertainment future may come at an unthinkable cost.

From Concerts to Cricket: Bengaluru tragedy a wake-up call for India’s live events industry

In a major development for cricket broadcasting, JioStar and Sony Pictures Networks India (SPNI) have announced a strategic collaboration to share media rights for India’s upcoming tours of England in 2025 and 2026. The partnership, unveiled today, promises to redefine how Indian cricket fans experience the game across digital and linear platforms.

As part of this groundbreaking agreement, JioStar will exclusively stream all matches—including Tests, ODIs, and T20 Internationals—on its digital platform, JioHotstar. SPNI, meanwhile, will retain television rights, broadcasting the series on its Sony Sports Network channels.

The marquee event of the collaboration is the highly anticipated five-match Test series in England, beginning June 20, 2025. The series will be live-streamed on JioHotstar and simultaneously aired on Sony Entertainment Television, ensuring seamless access for cricket enthusiasts across screens.

The arrangement also includes the 2026 white-ball series, comprising three ODIs and five T20Is, to be played during India’s return tour of England.

The collaboration also covers the 2026 white-ball series, featuring three One-Day Internationals and five T20 Internationals during India’s subsequent tour of England.

JioStar and SPNI team up for exclusive coverage of India’s 2025-26 England Tours

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has called an urgent meeting of its Apex Council to appoint former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Achal Kumar Jyoti as the electoral officer, as per reports.

This is for the upcoming elections for the vacant positions of Honorary Secretary and Honorary Treasurer. These positions were recently vacated following Jay Shah's appointment as the ICC Chairman on December 1, and Ashish Shelar's new role as a Cabinet Minister in Maharashtra's government.

According to BCCI's constitutional guidelines, a Special General Meeting (SGM) must be convened within 45 days of an officer-bearer's resignation to elect a successor, the report added. 

Additionally, the board is required to appoint an electoral officer at least four weeks prior to the election. 

In line with this requirement, the board has proposed the appointment of Jyoti, a retired IAS officer from the 1975 Gujarat cadre, who served as India's Chief Election Commissioner from July 2017 to January 2018.

At present, Assam's Devajit Saikia is performing the duties of the interim Secretary, while the Treasurer's position remains vacant.

Meanwhile, the BCCI’s financial health continues to impress. The board's bank balance surged by approximately Rs 4,200 crore this year, bringing its total reserves to an astonishing Rs 20,686 crore. 

A significant portion of the BCCI’s income stems from IPL media rights and bilateral cricket rights, alongside revenue generated from the International Cricket Council (ICC).

The IPL media rights deal, struck in June 2022, brought in an extraordinary Rs 48,390 crore for a five-year period. The BCCI's financial statement for FY2024 highlights a substantial increase in earnings, with the board's income growing from Rs 16,493 crore in FY2023 to Rs 20,686 crore.

In FY2023-24, the BCCI exceeded its revenue projections, earning Rs 8,995 crore instead of the projected Rs 7,476 crore.

BCCI calls for emergency meeting to appoint electoral officer for vacant secretary and treasurer posts

The mega auction for the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) season will be held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, on November 24 and 25, as announced by the BCCI. Player registration closed on Monday, with a total of 1,574 cricketers (1,165 Indian and 409 overseas) registering for the event. The auction coincides with days three and four of the first Test match between India and Australia in Perth, which starts on November 22.

Each franchise will be able to form a squad of up to 25 players (including retained players), with a total of 204 slots available. This player pool comprises 320 capped players, 1,224 uncapped players, and 30 players from Associate Nations.

Among the capped players, 48 are from India, while 965 Indian uncapped players will also be available in the auction. High-profile Indian stars like Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer, and Arshdeep Singh are expected to be part of this year’s event.

The 10 franchises collectively have around ₹641.5 crore available for the 204 slots, of which 70 are reserved for overseas players. Currently, 46 players have been retained by the 10 franchises at a total expense of ₹558.5 crore.

Each franchise was initially allocated ₹120 crore for building their squads. Following the retention process announced on October 31, the Punjab Kings have the largest remaining budget at ₹110.5 crore, having retained only two uncapped players, Shashank Singh and Prabhsimran Singh, for ₹9.5 crore.

The Rajasthan Royals, led by Sanju Samson, have the smallest purse at ₹41 crore after retaining six players. The Kolkata Knight Riders have also retained six players, leaving them with a budget of ₹51 crore.

Mega IPL auction to take place in Saudi Arabia on Nov 24 and 25

The Indian Premier League (IPL) is set to become even more financially rewarding for cricketers, with the introduction of match fees for every game a player participates in. 

In a historic move announced by BCCI Honorary Secretary Jay Shah on Saturday, IPL players will now receive Rs 7.5 lakh per game, adding to their existing contracted amount.

Taking to social media platform X on September 28, Shah declared, "In a historic move to celebrate consistency and champion outstanding performances in the #IPL, we are thrilled to introduce a match fee of INR 7.5 lakhs per game for our cricketers!"

Players participating in all league matches of a season stand to earn Rs 1.05 crore in addition to their contracted fees. Each franchise will earmark Rs 12.60 crore as total match fees for their players for the season. Shah highlighted that this marks a new era for the IPL, enriching the rewards for players' dedication and performance.

The new match fee structure is expected to take effect from the 2025 season, following the decision made at the IPL Governing Council meeting in Bengaluru. A mega auction, likely to take place in November 2024, will precede the new season.

The 2024 IPL auction saw new records being set with Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) signing Australian player Mitchell Starc for Rs 24.75 crore, making him the most expensive player in IPL history. Pat Cummins, another Australian fast bowler, was brought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for Rs 20.75 crore, making him the second costliest player in the league.

IPL players to earn Rs 7.5 lakh per game in new match fee structure

Parle bats on cricket craze again: Extends CCL partnership for 10th season

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the extension of contracts for head coach Rahul Dravid and the support staff of Team India (Senior Men). The BCCI engaged in discussions with Dravid after the term of his contract ended following the recently concluded ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 and unanimously agreed to further the tenure.


The Board acknowledged Dravid's instrumental role in moulding the Indian Team and commended his exceptional professionalism. The Board also appreciated VVS Laxman for his exemplary roles as head of NCA and as the stand-in head coach. Similar to their legendary on-field partnerships, Dravid and Laxman have worked closely in driving Indian Cricket forward.

BCCI extends contracts of head coach Rahul Dravid and the 'Senior Men' of Team India

Despite the disappointment of not winning the cup, the resilience of advertisers remained unwavering during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023. The season exceeded expectations when it came to ad volumes and expenditure said experts.

“In terms of ad expenditure, the season proved to be a financial triumph, boasting a total spend ranging between Rs3200 crore to Rs3300 crore. The festive season, a commercial powerhouse in its own right, amassed Rs3700 crore, with the World Cup chipping in a significant 7 percent to 8 percent to this pool,” said a leading media buyer on condition of anonymity.

The climax of the series also witnessed a frenzied last-minute rush for ad slots, with premiums soaring to Rs30 lakh to Rs45 lakh per ten seconds.

“This surge in demand was naturally fuelled by the exceptional value placed on the team's journey to the finals. Advertisers bet their money on this journey and the attention it grabbed across markets,” the media buyer added.

As per sources, the finale emerged as a true spectacle, with the India-Australia match alone witnessing a remarkable 30 percent surge in ad spends. The semi final between India and New Zealand was a close second both in terms of spends and volumes.


Talking of ad volumes, as per exclusive numbers shared by TAM Sports, ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 witnessed an indexed growth of 17 percent from all matches in terms of average ad volumes per match compared to the 2019 season.


Ad Volumes in the data provided by TAM Sports, are for advertising across 16 channels for. The analysis is based on pure advertising excluding franchisees, promos, filler, film trailer and official broadcaster.


During the 48 matches of the season, the number  of categories grew from 75 plus to 105 plus. Number of advertisers touches 95 plus from 90 plus in 2019 and the number of brands also increased from 170 plus to 225 plus.


As per TAM data, the top advertising categories this year were e-commerce, perfumes, cars, soft drinks, pan masala. The common categories between this year and the 2019 edition were perfumes/deodorant, pan masala and ecom-wallets.


The leading advertisers for the 2023 World Cup were Vine Product, known for their popular body spray brand Fogg, followed by FX Mart, Mahindra & Mahindra, Coca Cola and Hindustan Unilever.


The count of new categories stood at 55 plus, with the top five new entrants being anywhere banking, paints, footwear, consumer durables/home appliances and banking services and products.


There were also about 25 categories that were present in the 2019 World Cup but were missing this year. They were ecom-education, ecom-auto products and services, ecom-other services, ecom-auto rental services and ecom-food/grocery.


Number of new brands was an encouraging 215 plus with the toppers being Bharat Petroleum Mak, Kamla Pasand Silver Coated Elaichi, Indusind Bank Indie App, Vi Cellular Phone services and Apple iPhone 15 Pro.


This was indeed a season of exceptions. Another leading media buyer with expertise in both television and digital said allocating 10-20 percent of yearly advertising budgets to high-impact events such as the ICC World Cup and IPL is a common practice for companies but for this World Cup played in home grounds, brands have gone above and beyond, dedicating as much as 30 percent of their annual funds to the tournament.



“The increased advertising expenditures can be attributed to the tournament’s ability to engage diverse target audiences, enhance both reach and frequency, and leverage various media platforms (TV, digital) and language feeds (Hindi, English & regional),” they said.


Speaking of language feeds, as per TAM Sports, brands of HUL were top exclusive on Hindi+English language sports channels and regional language sports channels.


Top Brands on Hindi+English channels were Lux Jasmine & Vitamin C+E, Cadburys Celebrations, Close Up Ever Fresh, Kent Mineral Ro and Frooti.


Top brands on regional channels on the other hand included, Boost, Indulekha Svetakutaja Dandruff Treatment Oil, Pepsodent Germi Check, Surf Excel Quick Wash and Amul Taaza Milk.


Among the 168 common brands between these two categories, those who topped the charts were, Phonepe, Fogg, Bharat Petroleum Mak, Puro Healthy Salt and Kamla Pasand Silver Coated Elaichi.


ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 nets Rs3300 crore in ad revenue, welcomes 215 new brands

Cricket remains perennially popular in India, evident from the increasing ad sales during cricketing seasons. According to a recent TAM report, the Asia Cup 2023 recorded a notable 31 percent surge in ad volume compared to the 2018 ODI (one day international) edition.

Food and beverages claimed the top spot in ad volumes, followed by personal care/hygiene, construction, industrial and real estate, materials/equipment, services, and automotive. These top five categories collectively contributed 43% to the overall advertising during the 2023 Asia Cup, contrasting with the 2018 ODI tournament where e-commerce, wallets, smartphones, aerated drinks, and perfumes dominated.

In 2023's Asia Cup, the leading categories included perfume/deodorant, paints, biscuits, carbonated soft drinks, and cars.
